Hyena Hides Inside Elephant To Escape Lion

A rare and fascinating moment was captured by Chris Vermaak during a game drive in Kruger National Park. An elephant carcass, the result of a recent lion kill, became an unexpected hiding spot for a hyena.

While a lioness rested near the elephant’s head after the hunt, a lone hyena cleverly concealed itself inside the elephant’s belly — its nose and teeth barely visible on closer inspection. Covered in blood, the hyena cautiously peeked out, waiting for the right moment to escape.

Lions and hyenas have a long-standing rivalry in the wild, often competing for food. While hyenas usually work in groups to challenge lions, this one found a more creative, solitary solution — hiding in plain sight to avoid danger.
