Elephants Defend Their Young from Wild Dogs in Kruger

A remarkable encounter between elephants and African wild dogs was recently captured by Deon Kelbrick during a game drive near Nkhoro Bush Lodge in Greater Kruger, South Africa.

The video shows a small pack of wild dogs approaching a herd of elephants, which includes a young calf. Sensing potential danger, one of the elephant cows becomes alert, flaring her ears and raising her trunk to warn the dogs to stay away.

When the dogs hesitate but continue approaching, the elephant escalates her response with head-shaking and a mock charge. Other members of the herd quickly join in, forming a united front to protect the calf.

Trumpeting loudly, the elephants chase the dogs away. During the commotion, the mother elephant accidentally kicks her own calf, though the youngster appears unharmed.

After ensuring the threat is gone, the elephants calm down, reminding everyone why they are considered some of the most protective animals in the wild.
