Roxy the Hyena “Laughs” Loudly in Front of Her Meal

During a volunteer experience in 2012 at a South African refuge, one of the animals under care was a spirited female hyena named Roxy. Each week, her enclosure needed cleaning — often filled with white hyena scat, the result of their ability to eat and digest bones completely. Feeding time was always the highlight, not just for Roxy but for everyone who cared for her.

Whenever her meal arrived, Roxy would erupt with loud, excited vocalizations often mistaken for laughter. It was her way of expressing anticipation and enthusiasm, a unique sound that showcased the personality and intelligence of hyenas. This memorable moment captures the charm of Roxy’s character and the unforgettable experiences of working closely with such remarkable animals.
