While lionesses often chase or overpower hyenas without killing them, males take no chances. They are known to actively hunt and kill hyenas, eliminating rivals that might threaten their territory or scavenge their kills. Even in large numbers, hyenas rarely stand their ground when a dominant male approaches. In the hierarchy of the wild, one roar is enough to scatter an entire pack.
