In a heartwarming moment filmed by Michael Moth at MalaMala Game Reserve, a lioness was spotted teaching her four tiny cubs how to climb a tree. The guides had given the new mother and her litter some space in their first days, but on this occasion, she proudly revealed them to onlookers. The cubs were first seen playing in a dry riverbed when their mother, perched in a nearby tree, began calling out to them.

At first, the young cubs appeared unsure of how to respond. They circled the base of the tree, looking up and letting out playful calls of their own. Some attempted to climb a fallen branch, thinking it was more suited to their size, but the mother’s persistent calls made it clear she wanted them to attempt the real tree. Despite lions not being known for climbing like leopards, this mother seemed determined to pass on a rare and useful skill.
Eventually, one brave cub decided to take on the challenge. With tiny claws gripping the bark, it slowly pulled itself up toward its mother. After a few determined efforts, it reached her, greeted by her pride and affection. One by one, the other cubs followed, creating a touching family moment. By the end, the mother came down with her cubs, proud of their effort and success in learning a skill that could one day prove vital in the wild.
