Outnumbered but not outmatched, two lions hold their ground as a noisy clan of hyenas pushes their limits. Who will steal the meal in the end?

Lions Surrounded at Supper
While out on safari in near Marimba Bush Lodge in Kruger National Park, safari-goer Alberto captured a dramatic moment between two of Africa’s apex predators! In the flooded grasslands of what appeared to be a recent rainstorm, two lions were happily enjoying the spoils of a fresh kill before trouble rolled in.

Catching the smell of the kill, a rowdy clan of more than fifteen hyenas descended upon the scene, quickly shifting the dynamic from a peaceful meal to a territorial standoff! The lions, visibly annoyed, stayed close to the carcass with their ears pinned back, eyeing the scavengers carefully as they began their signature harassment tactics.
The air was filled with yips, cackles and growls as the hyenas paced the perimeter and began to close in. Tension built at the scene as the clan’s tactics boldened.

The hyenas were seemingly waiting for the perfect opportunity to snatch a snack or maybe even the whole meal!
Tactics of the Scavenger Elite
Hyenas are masters of patience and persistence, especially when it comes to stealing a meal. Rather than rushing in blindly, they test the limits of their rivals by forming a loose perimeter and vocalizing incessantly.

The high-pitched chatter of hyenas serves multiple purposes. It intimidates and disorients their rivals, but also signals for reinforcements.
Once the lions appeared sufficiently bothered or distracted, individual hyenas took turns darting in with lightning speed to grab at scraps. As each one inched closer to the prize, the lions growled angrily in protest.

In the end, the hyenas’ strategy paid off when one particularly bold hyena managed to snatch the bulk of the carcass and made a triumphant, muddy getaway. At this point though, the lions had already consumed the majority of the carcass, so didn’t seem too bothered to leave the scraps to the hyenas.
A Rivalry As Old as Time
The animosity between lions and hyenas is evolutionary. Both species are apex predators that compete for similar resources and territories, creating a lot of overlap and conflict.

Lions often kill hyenas to reduce competition, while hyenas target vulnerable lion cubs or sick individuals. While lions are physically stronger and more imposing, hyenas use their intelligence, numbers, and endurance to level the playing field.
Neither side is truly dominant so the balance in power can shift based on context, hunger, and opportunity. Hostilities between the two species are deep-rooted and play out in scenes like this one.

Nature’s Power Struggle
Though the lions ultimately surrendered the scraps of their meal, they didn’t walk away hungry or humiliated. In this encounter, both sides demonstrated why they are two of Africa’s most formidable carnivores.

The lions showed remarkable patience and dominance, holding the hyenas at bay long enough to feast, while the hyenas showed equal persistence and coordination to snag what remained. Scenes like this are a powerful reminder of the ongoing tug-of-war in nature, where survival doesn’t always belong to the strongest, but often to the most strategic.
