In Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a dramatic struggle unfolded when a leopard targeted a wildebeest calf within a large herd. While adult wildebeest are strong and dangerous prey for a lone leopard, the presence of a vulnerable calf offered the predator a chance. Leopards rely on stealth and patience, and this one used the long grass to stalk its target, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
When the herd moved through the clearing, the leopard launched its attack, knocking the calf off balance. Immediately, an adult wildebeest reacted and charged toward the leopard in an effort to protect the calf. The confrontation showed the powerful instinct herd animals have to defend their young. For a moment, it looked as though the adult’s bravery might scare the predator off and save the calf.
Despite the wildebeest’s determined defense, the leopard ultimately succeeded. Using the surrounding grassland for cover and its impressive strength, it overpowered the calf and dragged it away to safety.
