Along a riverbank in Kruger National Park, a tense encounter played out between a crocodile and a determined group of hyenas.

The crocodile had already secured a carcass and was deep into feeding when a small clan of hyenas appeared. They kept their distance at first, studying the situation carefully. Nearby, a few scavenger birds lingered as well, waiting for any opportunity to grab leftovers.
It seemed likely the hyenas had originally made the kill, only to lose it to the crocodile’s dominance. Now, they hovered close, clearly hoping to take it back.
Even with numbers on their side, they didn’t rush in recklessly. A crocodile’s bite is devastating, so the hyenas stayed cautious, avoiding its head and jaws. Instead, one individual edged closer from behind.

Testing the waters, it darted in and snapped lightly at the crocodile’s tail.
The response was minimal. The crocodile flicked its tail and kept eating, unbothered.
That small moment of resistance encouraged the others. Soon, another hyena approached, more confident. It moved carefully around the reptile, then suddenly lunged at the tail, clamping down and pulling hard.
For a second, it looked like the plan might work—the tail even lifted slightly off the ground.
But the crocodile quickly proved its strength. With a forceful swing, it shook the hyena loose and continued feeding as though nothing had happened.

Now more energized, the hyenas grew bolder. Their body language shifted—tails raised, movements quicker—as they began repeating the same tactic. One after another, they targeted the tail, trying to distract or drag the crocodile away from the carcass.
Still, the crocodile remained firmly in control.
Its thick, armored skin and powerful muscles made it incredibly difficult to move. Each bite from the hyenas triggered defensive tail swipes, fast and forceful enough to cause serious harm. For the hyenas, even a minor injury could mean death in the wild, so every attempt carried real risk.

Despite that danger, they kept trying.
Again and again, a hyena would grab the tail and pull with all its strength. Each time, the crocodile resisted effortlessly, refusing to give up its meal.
In the end, persistence wasn’t enough.
The crocodile stood its ground and finished feeding, while the hyenas were left watching from the sidelines—outmatched despite their determination.
