Until he met a playful Labrador, an orphaned elephant struggled to make friends.

This is the story of Bubbles, a rescued orphan elephant, and Bella, a labrador retriever, who form an unusual but heartwarming bond.

Bubbles aren’t your typical elephant; she enjoys playing catch with her best friend, a labrador who is only about the height of her knee.

Even after Bubbles dives into a large pool of water, Bella climbs on the giant’s back to retrieve the ball.

Bubbles were flown in from Africa as a toddler after her parents were slain for their tusks, and she now lives at the Myrtle Beach Safari.

‘They really love to romp around together,’ Bella says as she leaps over her playmates to collect the ball and then swims away, leaving the elephant trailing her.

The animals at the Myrtle Beach Safari are part of a wildlife conservation program in Southern California called The Rare Species Fund.
