For the magnificent photo below, photographer Mark Cowan received a special tribute at the 2016 Royal Society Publishing photography competition.
He shot the photo while on a research trip to the Amazon for the University of Michigan’s Herpetology Division, where he was investigating amphibian diversity.
It’s a photograph of a surprisingly peaceful caiman wearing a crown of colorful butterflies.
These beautiful flying insects take salt and other minerals from the water collected on the caiman’s skin.
Clearly, the caiman seems unconcerned about the butterflies’ attention, especially because the association provides no nutritional advantage.
Three species of butterflies can be seen on the caiman, and the photo got a special award for its distinctive arrangement.
