The Red-Shanked Douc is the world’s most colorful primate (10 Pics)

With its striking orangey-yellow face and reddish-brown legs, the Red-shanked Douc is one of the most colorful monkeys around.

Their tails are very distinct; they are long and white, with a white fur triangle around the bottom.

The rest of their body is black and grey, with white whiskers and forearms.

They attain a height of about 2 feet, with their tails reaching a length of 2,5 feet, They weigh between 18 and 26 pounds.

The Vietnamese name for them is ‘Red-Shanked Douc,’ which translates to ‘Five-Colored Macaque.’

These unusual apes are rarely observed on the ground; instead, they can be found in social groups among the treetops.

Leaves, flowers, buds, seeds, and fruit make up their food.

They are endemic to Asia and can be found in the region between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Excessive logging is threatening this rare species’ habitat, and they are losing their home.

Hunting is another hazard; Doucs are hunted for their subsistence and traditional medicine.
